Historical Background

"When Caroline returned to England to claim her place as queen in 1820, Lady Anne [Hamilton] met her in Montbard, Flanders, and they returned to London together. The queen then took up residence with her for a short time in Portman Street. Lady Anne continued to be seen in public with the queen until Caroline's death in 1821, accompanying her on her failed attempt to be present at the coronation. She accompanied Caroline's body to Brunswick and attended its interment." [DNB]

Content Description

Informing Bowyer that Her Majesty [Queen Caroline] had no miniature of herself whatever, but that there was a print coming out of her from a picture of Lonsdale's in Berners St, which if like the picture, was an exceeding good likeness, and the only one that resembled Her Majesty.

With regard to Lady Hamilton herself, she had no picture but one, which was at Mr Lonsdale's. The size of this was so small that it appeared to her of little consequence. She concludes: "I assure you Sir, the less that is said about me the better I shall be pleased."
