Facilities

Studio 2The school forms an integral part of the Royal Academy and includes purpose-built studios with excellent natural light. The studios are organised to allow as much flexibility of arrangement and working methods as possible.

The wood workshops include circular, fret, band and vertical-cutter saws in addition to a linesher, tenoner, morticer and Morso mitre-cutter. The sculpture workshop includes a compressor with a range of air tools including spray gun, a pug mill, pillar drill, mig, arc and spot welding, plasma cutter, metal cut-off saw, oxyacetylene, hot-rubber melting machine, top-loading medium-sized kiln and spray booth. Specialist equipment can be arranged for individual requirements. Technical expertise and advice are available from the Head of Workshop.

The school also features the country’s oldest purpose-built life drawing studio, and models are available for those with a particular interest in this practice.

Printmaking facilities include the full range of traditional techniques as well as the latest digital printing technology, using archival-standard inks.

The Epson suite, which has Apple Mac computers, supports digital media including large-format inkjet printing, time and sound-based media.

There is a darkroom for those wishing to make black-and-white prints. A variety of photographic and video equipment is available for loan.

A project space is available for short-term bookings.

A subsidised canteen and bar, situated at the heart of the school, offer hot meals and snacks. The bar, which is student run, opens daily between 6 and 8pm.
