The RA's new exhibition Johan Zoffany RA: Society Observed opens to the public tomorrow.

Following on from our earlier video on Zoffany's The Tribuna of the Uffizi, here's curator Martin Postle on the story behind the exhibition's poster image, The Sharp Family:

Granville Sharp was indeed a forerunner and mentor of William Wilberforce in the slavery abolitionist movement. His sister, Elizabeth, seated next to him in this painting, married one of my ancestors, George Prowse (1737-1767) of Wicken Park in Northants. What I love about this painting is that both the boatswain and the cabin boy of the Apollo, at left front, are also included in with this Sharp family portrait. Granville Sharp died in 1813 at age 78 & is commemorated in the Poets' Corner at Westminster Abbey .

informative introduction to inspire a visit; shame about the unfortunate use of the words 'dig around'!
