Video: Constable in Hampstead

RSS

If you visited the Royal Academy's recent exhibition Constable, Gainsborough, Turner and the Making of Landscape you would have seen a charming group of paintings and sketches of Hampstead Heath by John Constable RA.

Although more associated with the countryside of Dedham Vale in Suffolk - the 'Constable Country' shown in famous paintings such as The Hay Wain - Constable actually spent a large chunk of his life in Hampstead, as a current exhibition at Burgh House and Hampstead Museum shows.

In this video, Rebecca Lodge of Burgh House takes us on a stroll across Hampstead Heath and explains how this pocket of countryside just a stone's through from the city was so important in Constable's life and work. All of the oil sketches featured in the video are from the Royal Academy's Collections.

Awesome video! Hampstead Heath is such a national treasure for London. My new novel, The Witness, takes place in Hampstead. So both in Constable's time and today, Hampstead and its Heath play a role in artistic expression.
