Chagall: Between War and Peace

Marc Chagall's life spanned most of the turbulent 20th century. This important retrospective looks at his career in the context of his years in Russia and his experiences of war, religious persecution and peace.

The Impressionists rose to prominence during the years when Paris was establishing itself as the world's style capital. This exhibition looks at how the relationship between art and fashion captured the spirit of the age.

Alberto Giacometti
Musée de Grenoble, Grenoble
9 March – 9 June 2013

Sculptures, paintings and graphic works all feature in this exhibition, put together by the museum that has the distinction of being the first public collection in France to acquire a work by the 20th-century sculptor.

The Springtime of the Renaissance: Sculpture and the Arts in Florence, 1400-1460
Palazzo Strozzi, Florence
23 March - 18 August 2013

If you're in Florence this spring, don't miss this exhibition on the flowering of the Florentine Renaissance in the gem of Renaissance architecture that is Palazzo Strozzi. Artists featured include Ghiberti, Brunelleschi and Donatello.

Life and Death: Pompeii and Herculaneum
British Museum, London
28 March – 29 September 2013

Buried by the eruption of Veusuvius in AD 79, the astonishingly well-preserved remains of these two cities provide an unparalleled snapshot of daily life in ancient Rome. This major exhibition will feature more than 250 objects, including casts of human and animal victims, and objects found during recent excavations.

Houghton Revisited
Houghton Hall, Norfolk
17 May - 15 September 2013

Britain's first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, amassed one of the most impressive art collections of his age, which included Rembrandt, Rubens and Poussin. He lavished so much money on art and on building his stunning neo-Palladian pile Houghton, that his heirs had to sell the art to Catherine the Great, and they have adorned the Hermitage in St Petersburg ever since. Now, for the first time, they are returning to their original setting at Houghton.

Reopening of the Rijksmuseum
Amsterdam
From 13 April 2013

After 10 years of renovations, the Netherlands' national museum of art and history opens its doors to the public again. It is closely followed by the reopening of the Van Gogh Museum (1 May), also following renovations, as the city celebrates the 160th anniversary of the painter’s birth.
