The sculptor Phyllida Barlow has recently been elected an RA. Born in 1944, she has long been one of the art world's best kept secrets. A professor at the Slade, who has nurtured the careers of many successful artists, her striking and very physical work has long been appreciated by other artists but has only recently come to the attention of a wider public.

Barlow has recently been taken on by blue chip international gallery Hauser & Wirth, who are staging a major commercial show of her work ('RIG', last day 22 October) that takes over their entire Piccadilly space, a vast Edwardian banking hall.

It is worth making a special trip to catch the last day of this show because of the sheer thrill of encountering Barlow's oversized, all-encompassing work that surrounds viewers and occasionally emits an eerie sense of the architecture deconstructing itself into raw elements of form, colour and texture.
