Surrounded by Royal Academicians, Sir Nicholas Grimshaw hands over the President's Medal to Christopher Le Brun.
Christopher Le Brun was last night elected President of the Royal Academy. Le Brun is the 26th President in a period of 243 years. He succeeds Sir Nicholas Grimshaw PPRA who has stepped down after seven years in office.
The President is elected by the Royal Academicians, the governing body of the Royal Academy. There are 80 Royal Academicians, all of whom are practising painters, sculptors, engravers, printmakers, draughtsmen and architects, as well as a number of Senior Academicians who are over the age of 75. Past Presidents include Sir Joshua Reynolds, Lord Leighton and John Everett Millais.

Very well done, Chris, from a former acquaintance at St. Margaret's Youth Club! Remember well being invited back to Essex Road to see your art work. Knew then that you had a great talent and enthusiasm for art as your mum had turned your front room into a mini art gallery. Congratulations!

An interesting choice. He has a very introverted, academic and personalised vision. Which way will he steer the Academy?
