High noon

In an ambitious Heritage Lottery-funded project for the National Forest in the Midlands, David Nash RA has made a major carving for each of the six distinct areas within the 200 square-mile site.A woodland in the making, the National Forest spans three counties: Staffordshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire. The National Forest Company is developing the landscape there, mainly by tree planting. And now Nash, internationally known for making monumental sculptures from tree trunks, has carved all six abstract ‘Noon Columns’ from sustainable English oak. ‘Each carving reflects the character of its surrounding landscape,’ says Nash, ‘so at Grangewood in Derbyshire my column reflects the seven church spires above the villages. But to unify the whole scheme, I’ve cut slits in all the columns on a north-south axis, so only the noon sun will shine through them.’ Richard Cork
