The Royal Academy's popular Summer Exhibition has been an annual event since 1769. Around a 1,000 works including paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture and architectural design are selected from over 10,000 entries making it the largest open exhibition in the United Kingdom.
The Royal Academy Illustrated presents the highlights of each year's show and is a fascinating barometer of changing artistic tastes. The extensive range of illustrations, this year chosen by Bill Woodrow RA, includes a broad cross-section of the works on display and a number of installation shots of the galleries.
The introduction by Frank Whitford outlines the major themes in this years exhibition which, alongside the large pictorial content, makes this catalogue a handsome and informative document of this most popular event.
