David Hockney RA - A Bigger Picture - Exhibition Catalogue

Ra Jacket Reduced 2

Although closely associated with Pop Art and California, where he has lived for much of his life, the forthcoming exhibition and accompanying catalogue redefine David Hockney RA as an important painter of the English countryside. The exhibition David Hockney RA, A Bigger Picture presents, for the first time, his recent landscape paintings of the Yorkshire Wolds.

In the last decade Hockney has returned to painting in the open air, observing with honesty and intensity the scenery remembered from school holidays spent in East Yorkshire. These works convey the drama and splendour of nature and the pathos of our relationship with it, an age-old subject treated by Hockney with a modern eye, often informed by his interest in photography and digital media. Edith Devaney, curator, says Hockney has become "so close to the changing seasons and light, so attuned, that he'll get up at 4am to catch the light. He calls the time when the blossom comes out 'action week'."
The exhibition will also present a number of Hockney's works painted from the Fifties onwards. These include the photo-collages of the Eighties and Grand Canyon paintings of the late Nineties which put the Yorkshire works in context and highlight the striking relationship between past works and his current thinking and practice.

Illustrated with paintings, charcoal drawings, iPad drawings and video stills, many of which have never been seen before, this landmark publication confirms David Hockney RA as one of the greatest artists of his generation.

The exhibition catalogue has 304 pages with 250 colour illustrations, measures 30 x 28cm and is available in hardback.
