Martin Creed, 'Work No. 623'. Green neon, H 15 cm. Stephen Chambers RA hung this gallery with the intention of making the final part of the exhibition clear, confident and celebratory. In the centre is Kiki Smith’s bronze woman, reclining on foliage while gazing at the stars. Elsewhere are strong, singular works.
Chambers notes the ‘delicate, decisive paintings by Estelle Thompson and Emma Biggs/Matthew Collings in contrast to the orchestrated chaos in James Fisher’s entwined women ... hanging next to Gary Hume’s bird with outstretched wings; like Fisher’s painting, the image is found after the encounter, though their processes have little in common. Meanwhile, Martin Creed pulsates menacingly in the corner.’
