Two Situations
Part of Event Horizon

Brian Griffiths, Poster for Two Situations, 2008. Installation. Courtesy the artist and Vilma Gold, London. Brian Griffiths often works on a monumental scale but whether monumental or domestic in size his conceptual rigour is bound up with the process of making, so that everyday materials and objects are selected for their potential for fantasy and transformation, setting up rich evocative experiences for the viewer that promise escape yet remain rooted in the mundane.
His works are charged with humour, discontent and sadness. Previous exhibitions have encouraged excursions to other imagined places (and consequently other psychological states) via ramshackle contraptions such as a cardboard super-computer fashioned from household materials and a galleon constructed in salvaged wooden furniture.
This two-room installation creates environments of contrasting mood and tone, shifting between artefact, prop and sculpture where place, time and action seem to be suspended.
