Monday 20 September saw a lecture by South African architect, Peter Rich, one of the leading proponents of a contemporary African architecture that fuses modernism with a tradition born from a deep understanding of African iconography and vernacular. In his lecture, he presented three projects that are deeply embedded in time and place promoting a truly sustainable architecture with a lasting legacy: Mapungubwe Interpretation Centre, Limpopo, South Africa; The Alexandra Interpretation Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa and the Stelae field proposal for Aksum in Tigrai Northern Ethiopia.

At the time of the lecture, Rich was in London to construct the Earth Pavilion – a temporary structure commissioned for HRH Prince of Wales’ 'A Garden Party To Make A Difference'. For more information about the unique construction see Rob Gregory’s article in the Architectural Review .
