Alan Stanton RA

After studying at the Architectural Association in London, Alan worked briefly with Norman Foster before moving to California to study at UCLA, where he was awarded a fellowship in Urban Design. During his time in California he co-founded ‘Chrysalis’ with a group of architects and artists. Returning to Europe, Alan worked with Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers on the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Following its completion he taught at the Architectural Association and established his own practice working on projects in the UK, France and Italy.

In 1985 Alan, together with Paul Williams, formed the practice Stanton Williams. As founding directors they have been responsible for the creative direction of the practice since its inception, and continue to have a leading design role in the studio’s projects.

Alan has been Vice President of the Architectural Association Council, and a member of CABE design review panel and the RIBA Awards Committee. He has lectured extensively in this country and abroad, and has acted as external examiner at the Architectural Association, Kingston University, University of East London, Oxford Brookes University and Glasgow School of Art.

Alan became a Royal Designer for Industry in 2005 and is currently an external examiner at Greenwich University.

Stanton Williams is an award winning architectural practice with an impressive portfolio within the arts and culture, retail, commercial, education, and urban design.

Notable projects include: Compton Verney Art Gallery in Warwickshire, The Wellcome Trust Millennium Seedbank, Tower Hill square - Tower of London, the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry, the House of Fraser Department Store in Bristol and many art exhibitions in the UK and abroad.

Current projects include: the Sainsbury Laboratory - University of Cambridge, the new Campus for the University of the Arts London in King’s Cross, the Stadtmuseum Berlin, the Grand Musée d’Art in Nantes and the Eton Manor site for the London Olympics 2012.
