SUMMER EXHIBITION 2013
The Royal Academy's popular Summer Exhibition has been an annual event since 1790. Today, around a thousand works are selected each year from over 10,000 entries. The exhibition includes paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, architectural design and models, and continues to be the largest open exhibition in the UK. First published in the 1870's, the Summer Exhibition Illustrated presents the highlights of each year's show and is an indispensable record of this most popular event.
The gatefold cover features a detail from a tapestry - The Annunciation of the Virgin Deal - by Grayson Perry RA.
HOUGHTON REVISITED
In 1799 the family of Sir Robert Walpole sold his remarkable art collection to Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia. More than two centuries later these masterpieces, rarely seen outside Russia since that time, are returning to Houghton Hall in Norfolk. This handsome book, published by RA Publications, illustrates these superlative works hanging once again in the magnificent interiors at Houghton.
Thierry Morel uncovers the wonders of Walpole's collection, which includes paintings by Van Dyck, Poussin, Rubens and Rembrandt tracing its journey to the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg.
The fully illustrated catalogue accompanying the exhibition also explores Walpole's artistic tastes and collecting habits, and his beautiful house, one of the finest Palladian buildings in England.
