Published in conjunction with the major retrospective exhibition showing at the Royal Academy of Arts, this landmark volume documents the life and career of George Bellows. The artist skilfully portrayed the modern world in his paintings of street children, tenements, athletes, urban and rural landscapes, seascapes, war and family. The startling originality of his famous boxing canvasses, Stag at Sharkey's among them, set the stage for many later and similiarly ambitious works such as New York which is pictured on the cover of this catalogue. Bellows was also an accomplished graphic artist whose insightful illustrations addressed a wide array of social, religious and political subjects.
This fully illustrated catalogue includes essays by leading art and social historians revealing the full range of Bellows' remarkable artistic achievements and illuminating his unique and dynamic role in the history of American art.
335 pages, 270 illustrations, 28.5 x 24.5.
