The Artists’ Laboratory series presents the more experimental and less familiar work of contemporary artists, opening up the creative process to explore the conceptual and practical concerns with which they engage.
The sculptor John Maine RA was part of the interdisciplinary team that oversaw the recent restoration of the thirteenth-century Cosmati pavement in Westminster Abbey. The fourth in the Artists’ Laboratory series, this book tells the story of Maine’s response to the recovered masterpiece, his admiration for which inspired him to make a large-scale installation at the Royal Academy. Paul Huxley RA places the new work in the context of Maine’s career, while Dr Richard Gem introduces the history and significance of the Cosmati pavement. A conversation between Maine and the architect Richard MacCormac RA considers the differences between their respective practices, as well as the varied cultural references suggested by Maine’s installation, from Neolithic stone circles to surrealist painting
23.5 x 16.5cm, 48pages, 32 illustrations, softback with a dustjacket.
