Wohl Central Hall
The proportions, size and position of the Wohl Central Hall make it one of the most memorable spaces in Burlington House, but they can also create challenges for those responsible for hanging the Summer Exhibition. The huge model of a Romanesque church, almost like a model theatre, is here to show how Sir Anthony Caro is carrying out a commission to decorate the building with his sculpture, and his ‘interventions’, as he calls them.

Prominent in another way is Jeff Koons’s stainless-steel Cracked Egg. The medium of Norman Ackroyd’s huge monochrome landscape is as unusual as it looks. It may not be immediately obvious that it’s made from 64 etched plates, a means of making a work of another kind that this master-etcher has long had in mind. How to reconcile this with Ann Christopher’s two small abstract reliefs, Kenneth Draper’s five small assemblages, and David Mach’s commanding postcard collages, to say nothing of the photorealist paintings by Malcolm Morley, the very first winner of the Turner Prize, way back in 1984.
