Barbara Rae RA has selected and hung this display, which celebrates the work of Scottish and Irish artists. She hopes that visitors will experience a change of pace upon entering the gallery, which aims to ‘give geographically dispersed artists a chance to shine’. The broad selection of figurative and abstract art includes works by David Mach RA, Elizabeth Blackadder RA, Gordon Benson RA, John Bellany RA and Hughie O’Donoghue RA, who are exhibiting alongside non-Academicians like Sean Scully and Callum Innes. Rae feels passionately that the group ‘exemplifies a sense of freedom and degree of spirituality’ found in Scottish and Irish art, despite the apparently unrelated subject-matter of the individual pieces. Each has a ‘unique appeal’, she observes: ‘No two are alike.’
