Chris Orr RA, 'Comedy', Etching, 59 × 43 cm. Chris Orr RA has selected the prints here, working closely with Peter Freeth RA. Orr has kept in mind the fact that, this year, the dramatically different hang of smaller works in Gallery III leads beautifully into the Print Galleries, I and II. Nevertheless, he finds that these two spaces feel quite different to the rest of the exhibition. They are ‘packed with beautiful and significant prints that are affordable to the public’.
Orr is keen to emphasise the handmade, tactile qualities of some of the key prints – for example those by Nana Shiomi, Tom Hammick and Paula Rego – as these are central features of contemporary printmaking. Other distinctive pieces include a ‘rich and idiosyncratic’ work by Meike Georgi and Jenny Wiener’s analytical prints, the results of complex conceptual processes. Orr hopes that the range of art on show in this gallery will encourage visitors to ‘speculate, wonder, look further and enter the labyrinthine world of printmaking’.
