Everyone enjoys the experience of the beautiful great staircase of Burlington House when they visit the Royal Academy.
From the Royal Academy’s own collection, this display brings together drawings and images showing the creation the great staircase during Regency London between 1812 and 1818 for the wealthy Lord George Cavendish.

The rich decoration and exquisite details are captured in the architect Samuel Ware’s architectural sketches and in artists’ admiring watercolours. Discover how Ware’s designs for the great staircase emulated the historical character of Burlington House’s roots in a homage to Palladio and the English Palladians.
