Since the 1950s the Royal College of Art has published original prints by its students, staff and invited artists. The Printmaking Department is one of the oldest areas of study at the College and today it is a flourishing and dynamic part of the School of Fine Art. This year 2008, has seen a change of leadership from Professor Chris Orr RA to Professor Jo Stockham.

The exhibited portfolio titled Art School is an example of the college’s annual printmaking project which includes all graduating students and core academic staff who worked with the students during their final year. Projects of this type work as both a way of commemorating the group of students (every participant receives a set) and ensure that every student leaves the Printmaking course at The Royal College of Art with an understanding of the process of editioning a print.
Professor Chris Orr RA, November 2008:
"Not only as a guest on Desert Island Discs does one get the opportunity to choose one’s favourites. To celebrate my 10 years as Professor of Printmaking at the Royal College of Art I have had the privilege of indulging my taste by inviting 10 artists to the Royal College to make a print. As with all Royal College print publications the artists donated their work which was then editioned in our workshops and will be sold for the benefit of future generations of students.
"The RCA shows regularly at the London Original Print Fair and its publications are held by The British Council, the Government Arts Collection, The Victoria and Albert Museum and many other public and private collections. My choice of 10 reflects the diversity of printmaking today, from digital to traditional print methods and my own love affair with many different kinds of prints and attitudes to print. Many of the participants are Royal Academicians, including Michael Craig Martin, Tracey Emin and Bryan Kneale; other invited artists include Paula Rego, and Boyd and Evans. It is extremely important that the two institutions, The Royal Academy and the Royal College of Art have been active in encouraging and promoting printmaking as an important voice in contemporary art.
"It has always been the belief at the Royal College that the ideas, techniques and skills to make successful prints are collaborative. The artist comes to the print studio (not always an expert in printmaking) to realise ideas through the medium with craftsmen. The results can be spectacular, as this publication demonstrates. My own phrase for this is 'the realisation of poetry through mechanics'. All the work in this show is for sale and in these uncertain times when many investments are transitory, buying an original print is a pleasurable and rewarding experience."
