These images belong to a series whose concept came about when photographs taken by the artist were corrupted or erased during travel. Setting about reconstructing these works using a variety of images mined from the internet, the artist expanded the series into a larger body of work covering natural and man-made disasters. For Thomas Ruff, photography does not simply depict truth or reality, it isolates it, causing the viewer to question what is truth or fiction, and to consider the nature of the Sublime, beauty, and horror in nature.
