Sophie Calle
North Pole, 2009. Light box, sandblasted porcelain plaque, video, colour, photograph and frame.
Sophie Calle’s mother had three wishes before she died: to visit the ocean; to visit New York; and to visit the North Pole; none of which she achieved. After her mother’s death, Calle travelled to Greenland with the 2008 Cape Farewell expedition, taking her mother’s treasured diamond ring and pearl necklace with her. The commemorative act of burying her mother’s jewellery in a glacier, while contemplating the items’ future, is represented in this series of works.
