Antti Laitinen
It’s My Island I, 2007. Diasec mounted C-type print
An interest in citizenship and identity pervades this work by the Finnish artist Antti Laitinen. As he struggles against nature herself, and the cold temperatures of the Baltic Sea over a three-month period, the artist perseveres in the construction of his own island. Like King Cnut, he appears unaware of the futility of the exercise and the context within which he is operating. Idealised photographs of his newly established territory examine our desire to create our own versions of paradise.
