John Tanton, 'Village Near Aix-en-Provence'. Oil on panel. In 1987, John was one of the first Royal Academy Friends Volunteers, and subsequently worked in the Friends Office for over twenty years.
He was a naturally skilled painter whose education was cut short by service in the Royal Engineers for the duration of the Second World War.
John taught for many years at Eltham Evening Institute in South East London (now Haimo Road Centre of Greenwich Community College), and many trainee art teachers remember him from Dartford College of Education.
He was a lively and inspiring teacher, dedicated to passing on his love of the process of painting and his wide knowledge of the history of art. His enthusiastic teaching at Haimo Road, especially, was to turn many adult students to serious painting for the rest of their lives.
He is also remembered for his indefatigable sense of humour and his clever manipulation of the English language. How everyone loved his puns!
He showed many times in the RA Summer Exhibition, so it is particularly appropriate that this small show honouring John runs in the summer months.
