Year: Year 12

Inspiration: This year i have been trying to develop and change my own style- which has always been quite limited in terms of media and the fact that i can become too caught up within the details of a piece. At AS level i have looked at various artists and been greatly inspired by the works of artists such as Alice Kettle and David hepher and i have taken elements of their work into my own. Over the year i have been inspired to work faster and more fluidly, being challenged by the scale of some of the pieces that i have had to create- such as the large mixed media canvas i created for our first unit. By taking the bull by the horns i managed to push my own bounderies and learnt a valueable lesson.

Title: Downtown Local

Description: this work was inspired by a trip to New York and the theme ‘essence of the city’. While in New York looking for inspiration I decided that I did not want to look at the obvious things like bright lights and high skylines but I wanted to create a picture of the un-noticed part of the city, the dirty un-polished place hidden or ignored by visitors. So I painted the piece from a photo I spontaneously took in the subway, because I thought that the perspective and eerie emptiness (partially inspired by the haunting quay- brothers exhibition that I saw in new York) gave it an interesting visual aspect, but also because it related to the theme I was working on quite well.

Medium: Mixed media canvas (newspaper, ink, paint)

Width: 122 Height: 152

Keywords: New York, Essence of the City, Subway
