Title: My Irene

Description: We knew a couple of Irenes when I was growing up and so the only way I could differentiate the two was the Irene my Dad knew and my Irene. Irene has played a constant caring role in my life and so I’m glad that she gave me the opportunity to paint her. The composition was inspired by Philip Tolendano’s photography series ‘Days with My Father’ and the close bond between them he portrays through positioning and emotion. I am attracted to the idea that a face has the ability to tell us the story of that person’s life and that each line on a person’s face can represent a journey. I had been looking into anatomy throughout my coursework so the string was originally used to give the effect of planes of underlying tissue. However, on further reflection it is also a play on the words ‘a yarn’ meaning a story or tale.
