Inspiration: I have been studying 'A' Level Photography at Bethany for two years and am continuing with the subject at The London School of Communication when I leave. As part of my preparation for my A2 examination piece I researched the work of the Italian photographer Giuseppe Mastromatte who was inspired by the work of Magritte and Man Ray. I particularly like the clean cut style of his work and the way his images have a disquieting atmosphere despite the delicate features of the subject matter. I really enjoy experimenting with the different effects it is possible to achieve using Photoshop and was fortunate to be able to combine this interest with my A2 examination question which was based on the theme of Surrealism.

Title: 'Hand, I'

Description: I spent a long time trying to perfect a method of creating images of this kind effectively without making them look too amateurish or cartoon like. It took a lot of experimentation before I achieved a result I was happy with. I used a sixth form friend as a model, lit her with studio lights and like Mastromatte, kept the colours quite pale allowing the red lipstick to give the image a lift. I was really pleased with the way the eye genuinely appears to be part of hand yet at the same time penetrating through it and it gives the picture a slightly disturbing quality.
