Inspiration: The coursework for my Art A-level, of which the three submitted artworks are a part, began with the stimulus ‘lost’; this I further refined to ‘loss due to war’, as this is where I feel there is the most immense loss, be it physical loss of such things as buildings, eyesight or bodily limbs, or the loss of intangible things like morality or sense of humanity. I feel a viewer is immediately most strongly grasped by and empathises best with images of people so I have explored figurative forms. Within this development I explored varied techniques and media such as Renaissance conte for more technical studies of form, oil painting with shellac, highly textured mixed media, encaustic and clay sculpture. My extensive research of this fascinating theme lead me to such British War Artists as John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), Henry Tonks (1862-1937) and Henry Moore (1898-1986) all of whom have heavily influenced my practical and written work.
Title: Study of a Soldier
Description: Influenced by sketches made on the Front by British War Artists, this study is a staged composition, the aim of which was to convey through the body language of the man a sense of loss due to war. This was a preliminary drawing with the purpose of improving accuracy of form to support further works, and to develop control of the medium rather than being a completed work in itself.
