Name: Angus Crombie
School: Acland Burghley School
Town: London
County: London
Year: Year 13
Inspiration: I am 18 years old and have spent all my life in London. My art is influenced by my everyday surroundings and experiences. I see the practice of making art as offering endless creative possibilities and for this reason it never fails to excite me. Through drawing alone, I can interpret and record the world around me, observing the familiar from new perspectives. Within my work I seek to push myself to explore imaginative ways to communicate ideas and feelings in mixed media outcomes that are rooted in drawing. The artists that have had the biggest influence on my work to date include David Hockney, David Hepher and Michael Landy.
Title: Home
Description: This work explores the idea of home and the everyday surburban surroundings that I pass through on a daily basis. My idea of looking at my local area, documenting the places I see everyday was initially inspired by the work of Tom Hunter who primarily uses Hackney, the place he calls home as the subject matter for his work. I created a series of drawings responding to my photographs of the area where I live, looking at my every day surroundings, the places I see everyday and have an affinity too, I wanted to reveal the beauty that lies in these mundane surburban surroundings that so many people fail to see. I used my photographs combining them with line drawings stripping back the image replacing sections with my own interpretation of the space and how I see it, while retaining an aspect of realism through my use of photography. I also felt it was important to incorporate sections of photographs into the drawings to give the images depth and to provide the viewer with an understanding of the process of my work.
