Inspiration: I have loved art all my life and it has always been my favourite subject. I find it relaxing and fun and spend much of my time drawing or painting. I am also a musician and I play the piano and ‘cello. I am fascinated by the parallels between music, art and architecture throughout history; how they change and evolve as one. I love the art and culture of the eighteenth century and I often play and listen to baroque and classical music. I enjoy visiting stately homes of the eighteenth century for the architecture and their art collections, some of my favourites are Blenheim Palace, Chatsworth and Kedleston Hall. I love portraits and I look to the work of Godfrey Kneller, George Romney, Sir Joshua Reynolds and especially Thomas Gainsborough for inspiration. For a few years now I have had a particular interest in Gainsborough and have visited the house where he was born in Sudbury, Suffolk. I have also read many books about his life and works and have revisited stately homes and galleries especially to see his paintings. My favourite painting of his is ‘The Morning Walk’ in the National Gallery.

Title: The Comic Muse

Description: This portrait was produced as a final piece for a project about Greek Mythology. I love classical mythology and how powerful it is and has been in influencing Western Europe, and how constant it has been for two thousand years. For this painting I looked at the work of Joshua Reynolds and his influences and I produced it as an answer to his famous portrait of Sarah Siddons. The figures in the background, their expressions and the pose of the main figure are all derived from the work of artists thought to have inspired and influenced Reynolds himself.
