Name: Will Allen
School: Manchester Grammar School
Year: Year 12
Inspiration: In terms of art, I have always been very keen of the classical medium, drawing and painting but until this year, I had never worked with oils. I have always preferred doing portraiture than other subject matter mainly because it is incredibly easy to get hold of source material but also because there's a lot more to creating a portrait than just physical likeness. In the build up to this image, I have looked at Frans Hals, Chuck Close, Lucian Freud and Euan Uglow. For me, going to the national portrait gallery was a huge boost not only in learning but also to show me a possible career choice.
Description: This is a portrait of my best friend and so in some way it was harder for me as I wanted to not only capture his physical likeness but also his character. I wanted to keep the painting quite loose and use bolder brush strokes and in some places, some quite angular marks like an Uglow or Frans Hals image. I was cautious of over working the painting as well and so in a lot of areas, especially in the face, there is only one coat of fairly thick paint; this also gives the image quite a looser quality. The hat was the major problem for me and it took a few attempts to get it right. In the end I laid down a thick base tone with dry brush marks over the top in order to create the hair like texture.
