Name: Theo Bass
School: St Edward's School
Year: Year 13
Inspiration: Ever since I started drawing pictures of my grandmother I have become obsessed with wrinkles. I enjoy making my portraits as confrontational and detailed as possible. This particular drawing (also shown with two of my other confrontational portraits) was inspired by some of Rembrandt's portraits of old age.
Title: Old Peruvian Lady
Description: I drew this using a thick graphite stick. I found that graphite enabled me to be expressive, and create great tonal contrasts which make the picture more dramatic. The challenge here was the sheer size of the piece, but this allowed me to go into great detail, making the portrait ever more confrontational. Although a lot of my drawings are from life, I drew this particular portrait from a photograph i found in a National Geographic Magazine.
