Name: Gali Lucas
School: Sixth Form College, Colchester
Year: Year 13
Inspiration: I am currently a student, studying at Colchester Sixth Form College where I am doing A-levels in Fine Art, Graphic Design and Photography. Next year I am going to do an Art Foundation course at Suffolk College, before applying to University for the following year where I hope to study Graphic Design. I am very passionate about Art and enjoy many different aspects of it. Photographically, I am very inspired by the works of Steve McCurry, I have enjoyed looking at his work for many years, and he made me want to go to India and take my own images, using similar techniques and lighting. Other artists such as Lui Ferreyra and Egon Schiele also really drive me on with my other work. They both have such unique styles and are very creative. It is the use of blocks and shapes and also continuous line drawings that really interest me and I have enjoyed developing my own style within these areas.
Description: I took this photograph when travelling in India. It was down a small street in Cochin where I noticed these large painted metal trucks loaded with bags full of rice parked in lines down the road. I feel that I have definitely captured this photograph at the exact point intended. I have caught the blurred wings of the birds taking off whilst keeping everything else in focus. The spread out wings really draw the viewer in, giving the shot more life and depth. The simple, yet stunning background of the painted walls and window shutters blends in nicely with the foreground. The two men seen to the left hand side of the frame are sitting in a very relaxed way and staring directly at the camera. I took this photo around midday, the sun was shining from above, which beautifully highlights and emphasizes parts of the photo.
