Name: Helena Knook
School: ACS Hillingdon International School
Year: Year 13
Inspiration: In my first year at high school in the U.S. I wanted to be a rock musician. However, when we moved back to the UK and I went to an international school my interest returned to my first love, art. After a year I decided to take IB Art at Higher Level. The IB Art course is rigorous and varied, and forced me to think creatively and explore my ideas in ways I never had before. The theme of my IB Art work has been “smoke”, and I’ve enjoyed the challenge of stretching this idea as a concept and as an image, at the same time as researching artists such as Sarah Lucas, Yayoi Kusama, and Henry Moore, all of whom have influenced my work. In my school art experience I have experimented with media including film, sculpture, painting, and printmaking. I am excited to attend a foundation course at City and Guilds next year because I am thrilled to investigate and enhance my view of modern art and how I can contribute to it in the future.
Description: Halfway through the IB, the rigorous nature of the program began to affect me and I became very stressed and anxious to do with work and school. I began to draw complex swirl patterns on pieces of notebook paper, which made me feel calmer. These drawings draw the eye in and represent my anxiety as well as medicating it. I made figurines by pouring plaster into plastic bags and wrapping them in rubber bands, then peeling away the plastic bags when they were dry. I pasted my swirl drawings onto these figurines. They represent people to me, and I titled this piece "Army" to indicate my feeing of intimidation as a teen surrounded by my fellow students, and the fear of being judged. School can be a competitive, intimidating atmosphere and I wanted to give the audience a sense of the anxiety that young people like me face every day.
