Inspiration: In my work I always try to push the boundaries, to think outside the box and create images that intrigue the viewer. I enjoy creating installation based work and making use of the space and environment around me. My work usually shares the common theme of 'the preservation of memories, identity and belief.' I create these ideas through expressive lighting and shadow, and by adding a sculptural element to my work. I have been influenced by the work of Christian Boltanski and his use of memory as a subject matter, and his use of light.
Title: Hiding Beth
Description: This is a expressionist painting of a photograph I took while preparing for the piece above. I painted it in sections, some being figurative, and some far more expressionist, mostly painted without a pallet knife or paintbrush, but with my hands or other found objects. The neutral tones in the paint work are interjected with bold strokes of colour and with sections of detail. The contrast in style of paintwork throughout the image creates a sense of movement to an image that would otherwise be static.
