Inspiration: I am greatly influenced by photorealism and therefore enjoy the work of Lisa Milroy, Chuck Close and Edward Hopper. I also find texture and textiles very interesting; whether it’s with the material I am working on or by incorporating bits into my work. Textural artists I find most interesting are Annette Messager, Eleanor Bowley, Lisa Solomon and Michael Brennan-Wood. I also really enjoy photography and I think this probably sparked my interest in photorealism. I enjoy working with paints, drawing and in 3D; I spend time deciding whether the colours and shapes are going to look right and work together. Although I like things to look right I most enjoy working with pen which means if you make a mistake you’re stuck with it; but with pen I feel I can be more expressive. I find colour very fascinating and I love the way that colour can represent emotions and create completely different feels to a piece; this is probably why my favorite painting is ‘Autunno’ by Cy Twombly.
Title: Tools
Description: In this painting I tried to create a photorealistic representation of a diverse collection of mechanical tools. I thought carefully about the selection of tools I would use and order I would place them in – based on colour, size and shape. This was to relate to the idea that mechanical objects often have to fit together in a specific way to work. In planning this piece I was heavily influenced by the work of Lisa Milroy. I wanted to make it look as if the tools were actually hanging on the wall and you could just pull them off at any time and use them. I also wanted to create a contrasting juxtaposition between the general thought that tools and mechanical processes are very messy and the crisp clean lines of the painting on its pristine white background.
