Summer Exhibition Edit
The Summer Exhibition
, now in its 245th year, has been described as a 'microcosm of British democracy'. It is the world's largest open submission exhibition, displaying more than 1000 works in all styles and media, where the work of talented newcomers hangs alongside that of globally acclaimed artists. A unique spectacle, there is something for everyone, and with this in mind the Royal Academy has invited a variety of speakers to present their edited highlights of this year's exhibition.
On June 14, RA Schools student Marisa J. Futernick leads a tour of works that have captured her imagination. Recently exhibited in Premiums, Marisa's work is consumed by an ongoing obsession with the past, specifically that of America in the 1950s and '60s. She tries to 'navigate her relationship with the failed promise of the American Dream by intertwining the personal with the historical, and fact with fiction.'

Following a long and successful career as a food writer, a few years ago Sue suddenly stopped writing and began drawing and painting, describing this life change 'as if a violent fever had overtaken me (a fever which still rages), made all the more mysterious by the fact that I had never done such a thing before'.
