Renoir’s Wall Power: Painting Large as an Impressionist
Evening Lecture
13 July 2012
In the Reynolds Room, a John Madejski Fine Room

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 'Girl with a Fan', c. 1879. Oil on canvas. 65.4 x 54 cm, © Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts, USA, 1955.595.
Between 1874 and 1885, Renoir – unlike his fellow Impressionists – produced large-scale work in which he explored the grandeur of Parisian life, leisure and fashion. Colin Bailey (Frick Collection) places some of Renoir’s iconic works in context and looks at his strategy as a modernist who navigated between the Salon and the independent exhibition.
