Johan Zoffany, Sophia Baddeley & Thomas King in The Clandestine Marriage, 1771. Tickets will be available on the door of the event from 6pm.

Zoffany’s paintings of theatrical scenes appear to be realistic records of the eighteenth-century stage. But was he as dedicated to creating an illusion as the plays and players that he depicted? The art historian Robin Simon investigates.
