An exciting confluence of developing art practices, art colleges and art institutions propelled Los Angeles into the 1960s cultural spotlight. Renowned artists Ed Ruscha and John Baldessari, Senior Curator of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art Carol S. Eliel, contemporary art collector Joan Quinn, and Professor Cécile Whiting, University of California, Irvine, recollect the West Coast art scene of the 1960s in this special panel discussion.

They delve into how Southern California-based artists negotiated 1960s Los Angeles – the centre of popular culture and urban sprawl – through their art, the influence of the West Coast’s art colleges on American art practice of the decade, and the growth and impact of Southern California’smuseums and galleries.
