Edouard Manet, The Railway, 1873. Oil on canvas, 93.3 x 111.5 cm.
National Gallery of Art, Washington, Gift of Horace Havemeyer in memory of his mother, Louisine W. Havemeyer, 1956.10.1. Photo courtesy of the National Gallery of Art, Washington This exhibition of over 50 works spanning the career of Edouard Manet (1832-1883) examines the relationship between Manet’s portraits and his paintings of modern life. By translating portrait sitters into actors in his genre scenes, Manet guarantees the authenticity of the figures that populate these paintings and asserts a more potent relationship between Realism and Modernity. Thematic groupings will explore late 19th century Parisian society through depictions of Manet’s family, public political figures, his models and his circle of literary, theatrical and artist friends including Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Emile Zola, Stéphane Mallarmé and Victorine Meurent.
