Johan Zoffany (b. 1733) trained in Germany and Italy. In 1760, Zoffany moved to London and was initially patronised by the actor, David Garrick, and by the court of George III. Zoffany’s work provides an invaluable, and at times, unique appraisal of key British institutions and edifices: the art academy, the Court, the theatre, the middle-class family and the Empire. Although his work was executed in painstaking detail, it was never dispassionate or objective, but infused with wry observations and cryptic asides.
