When George Bellows died suddenly at age 42, he was considered one of the greatest artists America had yet produced. He left behind a remarkable body of work for so short a career: some 600 oil paintings, and numerous drawings and lithographs. His fascination with New York’s urban landscape, both its technological marvels and the diversity and pastimes of its inhabitants, make him an artist of the modern city. In addition to street and boxing scenes, his work encompassed wild river and seascapes as well as ambitious portraits. This exhibition will be the first full retrospective of Bellows’ career in over 30 years and the first ever in Britain.
