Main Galleries
This landmark exhibition will trace the development of Degas’s ballet imagery throughout his career, from the documentary mode of the early 1870s to the sensuous expressiveness of his final years. This will be the first exhibition to present Degas’s progressive engagement with the figure in movement, acted out against parallel advances in photography and early film that he was aware of or directly involved in. It will bring together drawings, pastels, paintings, prints and sculpture by Degas, as well as photography by the artist and his contemporaries and samples of film from the period.
