Balcony Supper No. 2: The Illusion of Space

1 October 2013

6.30–10pm
Burlington Gardens

“Civilised life, you know, is based on a huge number of illusions in which we all collaborate willingly. The trouble is we forget after a while that they are illusions and we are deeply shocked when reality is torn down around us.” JG Ballard.

For the second Contemporary Circle Balcony Supper, the evening’s debate will focus on how our buildings have the capacity to influence and define who we are and who we want to be, exploring how they potentially affect our political and social behaviour. Set against the backdrop of Richard Rogers RA: Inside Out, the animated discussion over dinner will delve into the very boundaries of our definitions of public space with colourful and emotional interactions from invited speakers and all participating guests. Preceding supper, there will be a curator led tour of Inside Out, revealing the man and the ideas behind some of the most pioneering and radical buildings of the 20th century, including the Pompidou Centre in Paris, Lloyd’s of London and the Law Courts in Bordeaux.
