Head of Design at Foster + Partners Spencer de Grey RA speaks about selected cultural buildings designed by the practice, beginning with the Royal Academy’s Sackler Wing of Galleries in 1990, which provided the first opportunity to work within a historical building.

This strand of the practice’s work continued with projects such as the Great Court at the British Museum and the current redevelopment of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Many cultural projects, including the Winspear Opera House in Dallas, have also been driven by parallel imperatives to forge a bold cultural programme as well as to regenerate the surrounding urban context.
