Wotton House was built between 1704 and 1714 for Richard Grenville, whose family had lived in Wotton Underwood since 1166, having arrived in Britain with William the Conqueror. The design is similar to Buckingham House but on a smaller scale.
In 1820, a fire destroyed much of the house and Sir John Soane was employed to restore it, reducing its height and making creative use of the existing rooms. Landscape designs by Capability Brown incorporate magical vistas from the house to the many pavilions and lakes scattered around the gardens. The house has been faithfully restored by the present owners who generously take us on private tours of the house and gardens.
