Uppark Restored

25 September 2009
Friends Only

On this guided tour of Uppark, a beautifully restored eighteenth-century country house that was devastated by fire in 1989, we see the work of craftsmen of the 1990s set beside that of their eighteenth-century predecessors. In 1747, Matthew Fetherstonhaugh purchased Uppark for £19,000, and spent the next three decades remodelling and refurnishing the house, commissioning architect James Paine to redecorate in splendid rococo style around 1770. The owner’s son Harry collected French furniture, clocks and porcelain which are displayed in the house. In 1780–81, Uppark was host to Sir Harry’s mistress, Emma, the future Lady Hamilton. Subsequent owners took great care to preserve Uppark’s fine textiles and furnishings. As part of the rescue project after the 1989 fire, some damaged architecture and furnishings have been left to highlight the restoration work.
